about the sand village

Located in the Country of Wind, the Hidden Village of Sand is one of the five great ninja villages of the Naruto world.

The village is led by the Kazekage (Wind Shadow), the most powerful shinobi in the country. Notable residents include Gaara of the Desert, his siblings Temari and Kankuro, and Akatsuki member Sasori.

In power Sunagakure is rivaled only by the Fire Country's Leaf Village (Konoha). The Village of Sand does not seem to have the numbers that Konoha boasts, but they compensate through the quality of the shinobi they produce.

As little has been revealed about this village, there is not much we can tell you about its history. It seems to have been founded approximately 60 years before the start of the series. There is evidently a strong tradition of puppetry in the village, as revealed in recent chapters of the Naruto manga.

There have been five Kazekages to date. The third Kazekage dissappeared under mysterious circumstances, and was later discovered to have been killed by Sasori, a legendary missing-nin and Akatsuki member from Sand. The fourth (the father of Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro) was secretly murdered and replaced by Orochimaru before the Sand's invasion of Konoha. Gaara succeeded his father as the fifth Kazekage.

In recent years, the Wind country's Daimyo sought to reduce the power of Sand. In response, the Sand leadership joined Orochimaru and his Sound village in attacking Konoha. After the betrayal and murder of the fourth Kazekage by the Sound, the Sand surrendered to Konoha. A peace treaty was signed, and the two have since become strong allies.
